ONE BEER AND THE BOOZE INDUSTRY..........................byJim McGuiggan
A reader wondered if it’s okay for a Christian to drink an occasional beer or a glass of wine as a social move.Since he asked my opinion, here it is.I think the booze industry is for all that Christians in their right minds are against and against all that Christians in their right minds are for.I think to put a penny in the booze industry’s pocket is to line the pockets of a ruthless parasite.
I have little patience with the argument that many people can drink some wine without getting drunk.I’m not denying that.I'm saying that it’s the many millions of people that personally do not get drunk that keep the booze industry alive and well and respectable while its product steals the judgement and minds of millions of drinkers and causes incalculable hurt to the defenseless.Just recently here in the UK one research committee finally came out and publicly said that the booze industry does more harm to the nation’s economy than any other industry.I think it’s invincibly stupid to go on and on about passive smoking and dismissively jeer at those who rage against the destruction that booze is causing. Then some half-wits in government have proposed fines on bar-owners that serve booze to people who have already had too much. Can you beat that? The bars get them drunk in the first place and then they’re to be fined for serving more to someone drunk?
What about the medicinal use of booze?Yes, that old chestnut!Look, if you were in someone’s home and had a headache they’d offer you some aspirin or some such thing and no one would bat an eye.But imagine someone passing aspirin around as a social gesture?Good grief.
I use to argue quite a bit with people about this—no more. But all those who care to look around them and, if they care to, to do research into the matter, know or will come to know that the most abused drug in the world is booze.Any other industry that had the anti-social, anti-family, anti-economic fruits that the booze industry produces would be shut down or harnessed with the kind of restrictions that would reflect the seriousness of the destruction it initiates.
Can you imagine, that while looking at the record of the booze industry, the government says nothing, while it goes on and on about passive smoking?Don’t tell me there’s no gutlessness in politics.Don’t tell me there are no fads and fashions in politics.Don't tell me the booze industry doesn't have the nations conned (and some believers as well).
